I use RDTabs to access a Windows 10 Insider Preview virtual machine (QEMU/KVM on Linux Ubuntu 20.10 host). This has worked fine for several years. I'm using RDTabs 3.0.12.657. For the last 2 updates to the Insider Preview Fast Track OS (currently build 21382, co_release 210511-1416), RDTabs disconnects every 90 seconds. It does not matter if the keyboard/mouse are in active use or not. Microsoft MSTSC does not do this, nor does Apache Guacamole running on a different LINUX Ubuntu 21.04 machine.) Nor is there a problem running from the Virutal Machine Manager console when I RDP to the Ubuntu host (xrdp on the host) using RDTabs. This also does not happen on the standard Windows 10 (20H2) or Windows Server 2012. Only the Windows 10 Insider Preview. I have reported this to Microsoft also but since MSTSC seems to work, they might not care.

Thanks for letting me know. The library RD Tabs uses is also shared by some other MS and non-MS products, so let's hope it gets fixed. I'll keep an eye out on this. I don't have any recommendations at this time.

FYI: my Windows 10 Insider Preview was upgraded to Windows 11 and the same issue continues to occur. With RDTabs, I get disconnected after a minute or two (seems a little longer than 90 seconds). With mstsc, it sometimes disconnects once or twice then remains stable. I don't know if this could be the culprit but I use Duo Mobile to provide dual factor authentication for my RDP sessions. That seems to work fine without any issues (I receive the approve push on my phone and accept, the login completes.) When RDTabs reconnects, it fires Duo Mobile again. When mstsc reconnects, it does not.

I haven't installed Win11 preview yet, but I can do so in a VM. Do you see this behavior in a VM? I'll see if I can replicate. I'm not sure how Duo interacts with RDP for MFA. I have tested RD Tabs on MFA-enabled systems before, such as an integration using F5 BIG-IP and Auth0.

Sorry I haven't been back in a while. I had to abandon the Tech Preview because Microsoft changed the Tech Preview edition to require the same stuff that the final product will, and the VM was no longer capable of running Windows 11 because of a 6 year old CPU.

I forced Win 11 in a few weeks ago (using an alternative installer that bypasses the CPU check). This was a clean installation on a new Linux QEMU/KVM virtual machine. (Earlier versions were on VMware Workstation.) The RDTabs issue continues: RDTabs will connect, after a minute or two the connection is broken, and the connect process must be executed again. Same as before. mstsc works the same, also.

So RD Tabs does not work but MSTSC does work? And the system is running as a VM inside KVM (previously VMWare)?

That's good info, I should be able to attempt to reproduce.

Out of curiosity, did you check to see if the NIC has stable connection, ie, did you check to see if there are a lot of fragmented or dropped packets? You can pull those statistics (after the machine has been on a while) by using netstat:
- IP statistics: netstat -s
- Interface statistics: netstat -e

There will always be discarded packets or failed connection attempts, but the error/retransmit count should be fairly low. It's good to compare to a baseline (a known good system).
