The error message asked to post this issue, so here it is:

Creating a new config file "fixes" the issue. Not great considering that all my favorites are hosed.

I run RD tabs on Win7, so I don't think it's a 7 issue. I've seen this before. As you found it occurs when the user.config gets hosed somehow. You can delete it, or you can attempt to repair it by examining the XML in something like Microsoft's XML Notepad and look for the malformed elements. Or you can grab the user.config from the previous version of RD Tabs and copy into the new version and it should convert it automatically to the latest version.

Thanks for the response. If it helps, I was running RDTabs at the time when I had to hard-power-off my computer (as I had a "get the heck out of Dodge" moment). This event may have had something to do with the corrupt file.

File won't open with XML Notepad and there were no older versions on this box so I guess I'll have to re-create my favs and shut RDTabs down before any hard-power-offs.

Thanks.

That's too bad. You can use regular notepad (if you know how to manually parse it) or Visual Studio to help fix malformed XML too.

A good plan for any software I'd say, but not always possible. You could just regularly make backups of your favourites and settings every few weeks etc, that way if your config does get corrupted for any reason, you always have a backup of your favourites and settings. Even old favourites are better than starting from scratch.

This situation should be extremely rare. I have hard powered off before with RD Tabs open with no issues. .Net only writes the config file at application shutdown or when the application requests it. RD Tabs only requests it when settings have been changed or you modify a favorite.

But I agree. Backups are always good. 😉
